The Rutgers telephone system is based on Centrex service provided by Verizon. Our 14,000 on-campus telephone lines (extensions) are connected to large Centrex telephone switches in Verizon Central Offices in New Brunswick, Piscataway, Newark and Camden. The switches provide "dial tone" and connect our telephones to the worldwide telephone network for incoming and outgoing calls.
Centrex service also provides our on-campus service connecting New Brunswick, Newark and Camden with abbreviated dialing e.g. 5-xxxx, 122-xxxx, 121-xxxx
A number of standard Centrex features are included on most University extensions. These features include call transfer, conference call, call forwarding, automatic callback, call waiting and others. A complete description of features and instructions for their use is published in the Faculty/Staff Directory.
Departments are billed monthly through University accounting systems for Centrex Service and the funds collected are used to pay Verizon invoices.
Rutgers Centrex service also includes the more than 7000 telephone lines in our residence halls.
