1. Summary
The TD Network Database is an online suite of tools that enables Rutgers IT personnel to manage their network assets. Through the NetDB interface both departmental and centralized computing staff can list and control access to their TD-assigned networks, hostnames, privileged staff roster and custom access control lists.
NetDB was developed by the Rutgers Enterprise Systems & Services group in conjunction with Network Operations. This tool replaces a number of previous applications, both public and private. By integrating previously closed stores of information for access by departmental staff, NetDB gives staff greater control over network resources and offers many previously unavailable self-management options. Manageable assets now include group contact information, allocated networks, hostnames, and access control lists.
This documentation will detail how to obtain the maximum benefit from your access to this suite of tools.
2. Caveats / Disclaimer
Proper use of NetDB requires an understanding of the network concepts managed by the application. A staff member can easily cause a service interruption by altering a host record or access control list without considering all possible ramifications. NetDB contains an extensive amount of access controls and error checking to prevent common mistakes but trusted individuals may still over-ride these.
3. Obtaining Access
Before requesting NetDB access, the following is required:
- A current NetID with an staff role
- Purchase of a Safeword hardware authentication token from Information Protection & Security (email safeword_support@email.rutgers.edu)
- Confirmation of departmental association from a publicly verifiable administrator or previously verified Unit Computing Manager
Once the above conditions have been met, requests for NetDB access should be submitted via email to noc@rutgers.edu. If the applicant is NOT the highest 'ranking' technical staff member for the department we prefer that the request come from the manager. If not, the NOC must verify the request with that manager. The request email should include the following:
- Applicant's Full Name
- Applicant's NetID
- Applicant's Primary email address (departmental mail server names are fine)
- Departmental Association (preferably NCG name)
- Applicant's Immediate Supervisor confirmation of receipt of the safeword hardware authentication token
