CRITICAL DEVICE CRITERIA

Document Managed by Network Operations

Overview

The university network is managed and maintained to promote the business needs and activities of the university. It is not possible to guarantee that all elements are operational 100% of the time with no outages. A service level such as this would greatly exceed that which we obtain from our providers.

Unplanned outages have the highest priority for allocation of available resources. Further, outages with broad impact have a higher priority than outages with narrow impact.

Purpose

The purpose of this document is to present the criteria used to determine critical device areas of the University network.

Critical Device Area Criteria

Building priorities are established based on an impact analysis.

  1. Significant Network Impact

This implies that a large section of the network has been disabled. If a single outage disables many buildings, it would constitute significant network impact.

    • Core locations
    • Large aggregation locations

  2. Significant Service Impact

This implies an important service spans a very large segment of the university community.

    • Internet handoffs

  3. Significant Immediate Impact

This implies that the impact correlates with time and that the current outages coincide with a critical period.

    • Payroll
    • Class registration
